What causes color blindness?

Individuals with color vision deficiencies often inquire about the origins of their condition. Color blindness, or color vision deficiency, is characterized by the inability to perceive certain colors such as red, green, or blue, or any combination of these hues. Most cases are hereditary, with individuals inheriting this trait from their parents, resulting in it being present from birth.

The human eye contains three types of cone cells responsible for detecting red, green, and blue light. These cones are located in the macula, a central part of the retina essential for color perception. In cases of inherited color blindness, one or more of these cone types may be absent or malfunctioning, leading individuals to either fail to see particular colors or perceive altered shades within the color spectrum.

Non-genetic causes of color blindness are also notable and can include a range of eye health issues such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts, as well as ocular injury and age-related changes.

Its operational mechanism involves shifting colors outside the viewer’s missing spectrum into perceivable ranges. While partial correction can enhance visual clarity for some users, it is important to note that restoring normal color vision is not currently feasible. The application is primarily intended for users with color vision deficiencies; for those without such deficiencies, it offers entertainment value rather than functional benefit.
